The Philippines Celebrates World Statistics Day 2015
(PR-201510-PP1-02, Posted 26 October 2015)

On 20 October 2015, the Philippines was one with the world in celebrating World Statistics Day (WSD). This year’s observance of WSD underscores the theme, “Better Data. Better Lives”, in recognition of the crucial role of statisticians and statistics in providing quality and reliable information necessary in improving the quality of life across the globe. The WSD is an initiative of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), which was first observed on 20 October 2010. To promote the celebration of WSD 2015, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/69/282 endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) on 3 June 2015 to institutionalize the WSD observance on 20 October every five years.  Correspondingly, Proclamation No. 1135 “Declaring October 20, 2015 as “World Statistics Day” was issued by His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III on October 1, 2015, and encouraged all agencies of the government and the private sector to collaborate with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in advocating and implementing activities pursuant to the Proclamation.

The World Statistics Day (WSD) 2015 is celebrated in the country along with the 26th National Statistics Month (NSM), which also falls in October pursuant to the PSA Memorandum Circular 01-15 entitled, Celebration of the 26th National Statistics Month in October 2015 and 2nd World Statistics Day on 20 October 2015.”  The observance of the NSM started in 1990 with the issuance of Presidential Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month” by then President Corazon C. Aquino on 20 September 1990.

In celebration of the WSD 2015, the PSA held the inaugural PSA Career Orientation at University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, School of Statistics Auditorium on 20 October 2015, which was aimed to promote and encourage college students to pursue career in statistics.  A total of 114 students and professors from three schools, namely the University of the Philippines Diliman, University of the Philippines Los Baños, and Rizal Technological University attended the career talk.  The speakers of the event include PSA National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales; Dr. Dennis S. Mapa, Dean of the UP School of Statistics; Deputy National Statistician Josie B. Perez; and Ms. Patricia Anne L. Rivera, OIC-Chief of Statistical Standards Division. The speakers discussed the importance of statistics in a sustainable development and provided background of the career opportunities in PSA by sharing their experiences.

To drumbeat the 26th NSM and WSD 2015 and to reach to a wider audience, a webpage (www.nap.psa.gov.ph/nsm/26thNSM/default.asp); Facebook (www.facebook.com/26thNSM) and Twitter (@26thNSM) pages were put up.

The PSA also stages an Exhibit that showcases the history of the Philippine Statistical System. The exhibit will run from October 2 until October 31 at the TAM Building, East Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City.
