Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA) Announces Winners
of the 25th NSM Awards and Launches Exhibit on Evolution
of Official Statistics

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) congratulates the winners of the 25th NSM Awards which were announced during the opening ceremony of the 26th National Statistics Month (NSM) held on October 1, 2015 at The Heritage Hotel Manila. The event hosted by the Department of Health (DOH), was participated by producers and users of statistics from both the government and private sectors.

Winners of the 25th NSM awards were:

  1. On-the-Spot Poster-Making by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – Best Statistical Contest 

  2. Focused-lecture series entitled People at the Edge: Defining Near Poor of the Philippines” by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) - Best Statistical Information Dissemination Activity

  3. Dissemination activities on the on 8th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) - Best Statistical Forum

In recognition of the significant contribution of the private and youth sector in promoting the importance of statistics, new categories were awarded. The new awards were conferred to:

  1. Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) for conducting a training-seminar on Investigative Reporting and Numeracy - Best Statistical Information Dissemination Activity by private sector

  2. University of the Philippines Diliman-Statistical Society for their 28th Annual Stat-is-Eeks (a statistics quiz joined by 31 high school student teams) and 9th Annual Stat-en-Ek ek (a University-wide trivia quiz show - Best Youth Advocate of Statistics

The board of judges for the 25th NSM awards was composed of representatives from PSA, Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Department of National Defense (DND), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Justice (DOJ), and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC).

The awards were presented by Dr. Enrique A. Tayag, Director of Bureau of Local Health Development, and Dr. Rio L. Magpantay, Director of Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health (DOH), and Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General of PSA. The adjudged winners received a Plaque of Recognition and a cash prize of Php 10, 000.

The NSM Awards System has been instituted to give recognition to the outstanding participation in the NSM celebration. It is also a means of providing incentive to participating individual and collective agencies in the observance of the NSM and a way of encouraging wider participation to the NSM celebration and promoting the conduct of activities that will further the objectives and spirit of the NSM celebration.

In view of this month’s celebration of the 26th NSM, we invite government agencies and private sector groups to undertake activities, carrying the theme: “Pagyamanin at Gamitin ang Estadistika, Kalusugan para sa Lahat ay Abot-Kamay Na”. These NSM activities can then be nominated for the NSM Awards System, which will be opened by January 2016.

As part of the 26th NSM observance, the PSA stages an exhibit on Evolution Official Statistics set up at the ground floor of TAM Bldg., East Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City showcasing the history of the statistics and statistical operations in the country. Featured are the evolution of computing equipment such as the microprocessor, survey scope; publications such as the first Census of Population (1903), first Philippine Statistics Yearbook; first Input-Output Tables; as well as photographs of the pioneers the in PSS. It is open for public viewing throughout the month of October.
