NSCB Holds Users’ Forum on the 2006 Poverty Statistics for the Basic Sectors
and 2006 Child Development Index
(PR-200906-NS1-8, Posted 24 June 2009)
The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) will conduct a Users’ Forum on the 2006 Poverty Statistics for the Basic Sectors and the 2006 Child Development Index (CDI) on 25 June 2009, 8:30 a.m. at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City.
The generation of the 2006 poverty statistics for eight basic sectors, namely: 1) women; b) youth; c) senior citizens; d) urban poor; e) migrant and formal sector workers; f) farmers; g) fishermen; and h) children, is in accordance with NSCB Resolution No. 11 Series of 2007, Approving the Methodology for the Generation of Poverty Statistics for the Basic Sectors, which institutionalizes the generation of poverty statistics for the basic sectors through the NSCB.
On the other hand, the development of the CDI methodology as well as the generation of CDI estimates covering the years 2000 and 2003 was done in the Philippines by the NSCB recognizing the need for statistics that will measure the development of our children, not only in terms of their economic well being but their education and health aspects as well. This was released through the June 2008 Statistically Speaking article “Save our Children”.
The Users’ Forum will serve as a venue for the exchange of ideas and discussion of the latest lower-level/sectoral poverty and CDI estimates and to share the methodology and the results generated with the national government agencies, the academe, non-government organizations, local government units, and other institutions/organizations. It intends to focus on the estimates for children, to highlight the significance of child development in the national development agenda.
The users’ forum will include presentations on the following: 1) 2006 official poverty statistics for the eight (8) basic sectors, 2) the methodology employed for the CDI and the 3) 2006 estimates of the CDI. Discussions from invited reactors and an open forum will follow the presentations. The poverty statistics for the basic sectors will be presented by NSCB’s OIC, Assistant Secretary General Lina V. Castro while the presentations on the CDI will be done by NSCB’s OIC, Director Jessamyn O. Encarnacion.
Invited participants include representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which funded the activity, national government agencies and local government units in NCR and selected provinces near NCR, legislative bodies, other international agencies, academe, private sector, representatives from the basic sectors and the media.
