NSCB Tenders Testimonial Lunch in Honor of Prof. Solita Monsod
and Dr. Cristina Parel

As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) paid tribute to two distinguished women leaders in the country for their valuable contribution in promoting the relevance of statistics to society. The Plaques of Recognition were presented by the NSCB to Prof. Solita C. Monsod and Dr. Cristina P. Parel during a Testimonial Lunch held on December 21, 2007 at the NSCB Operations Room, in Makati City.
Prof. Monsod popularly known as “Mareng Winnie” was honored in recognition of her unwavering advocacy in promoting the relevance of statistics to society through her continuing and effective efforts to communicate to the general public the statistical products and services of the Philippine Statistical System, particularly of the NSCB. As a faculty member at the University of the Philippines (Diliman), Prof. Monsod was cited for her outstanding work in engaging her students in substantive and interesting discussion of statistics that enriched their learning experiences and enhanced their appreciation of statistics. The NSCB also lauded her exemplary efforts in encouraging an objective assessment of the quality of official statistics by various user groups; and her memorable stint as the first chair of the NSCB Executive Board from 1987 to 1989 that greatly inspired and motivated the NSCB Technical Staff to work with total dedication, deep conviction and the highest standards of professionalism that have been imbibed by the succeeding generations of the NSCB workforce.
Dr. Parel, on the other hand was recognized for her dedicated and distinguished service as pioneer of the University of the Philippines (UP) Statistical Center (now School of Statistics) serving for 26 years (1958 – 1984) and as first Dean of the UP Statistical Center for 15 years (1969 – 1984) that guaranteed the advancement of statistics and statistics education in the country, thereby ensuring the continuous availability of well-trained statisticians in the Philippine Statistical System (PSS). The NSCB also lauded Dr. Parel’s outstanding and exemplary contribution towards the professional development of her students, many of whom have since become leaders of the PSS; including her zeal and dedication in promoting the improvement of statistics and statistics education, thus enhancing the relevance of statistics to the development concerns of our country. Dr. Parel was the very first Filipino to earn a Doctorate Degree in Statistics.
Aside from the NSCB staff, the simple Testimonial Lunch was attended by various NSCB partners and stakeholders who through the years have shown their unwavering support and cooperation to the NSCB in the promotion and maintenance of an efficient statistical system in the country.
