No Abracadabra at the NSCB, says Dr. Villegas

Dr. Bernardo Villegas issued a public apology yesterday in a follow-up article entitled “No Abracadabra at the NSCB” in his “Business and Society” column in the Manila Bulletin regarding his earlier statement that the NSCB performed statistical abracadabra on the 2000 Census-based population projections.  This new article came out after the panel discussion conducted on 5 October 2010 as part of the 11th National Convention on Statistics and the “For the Record” article “On the ‘doctoring’ of population statistics” posted in the NSCB website, in which the question on the addition of 146,582 babies to the base population used for the projections and other related concerns were discussed, clarifying and disproving the allegations that “population statistics are being doctored.”

On behalf of the Technical Committee on Population and Housing Statistics, the National Statistics Office, the National Academy of Science and Technology, and the Philippine Statistical System, the NSCB would like to thank Dr. Villegas for his effort to acknowledge the “controversy unjustly provoked by [his] overly suspicious mind.”
